Kirstie Alley is probably best known for her role as Rebecca on the hit television show “Cheers.” She was also a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, a weight loss system that provides its members with food as well as weight loss counseling to lose weight.
As Rebecca Howe on Cheers, Kirstie Alley was beautiful, glamorous and slim. She was the female lead and love interest of Ted Danson’s character, Sam Malone, after actress Shelley Long left the show in 1987. She won an Emmy for her portrayal of this character until the show was cancelled in 1993.
Kirstie Alley got her start in the second Star Trek movie in 1982, which brought her to the attention of the public. The green eyed brunette was stunning and appeared in several feature films. She was in the hit film “Look Who’s Talking” which led the way for the first comeback of actor John Travolta. It was in the early 1990s, however, that Kirstie Alley started to gain weight.
After Cheers ended, Kirstie Alley starred in a TV show called “Veronica’s Closet,” but it was panned by the critics. It was also apparent that by now, Alley was considerably overweight, not good for an actress who made her living playing a femme fatale.
Making it Big in Hollywood
By the late 1990s, Kirstie Alley was often the butt of many jokes at the expense of her weight gain. She still worked as a comedic actress at this point, although her weight gain was rapidly increasing. After the cancellation of “Veronica’s Closet,” she starred in a few movies and by 2005, her weight was well over 200 pounds. She then began to star in a Showtime series called Fat Actress which detailed her attempt to make it as an actress in Hollywood by being overweight. It was at this time that she began using the Jenny Craig System and very publicly began to show off her weight loss in a series of commercials for the company. She claims to have lost 75 pounds using the Jenny Craig System, but has relinquished her title as spokesperson to actress Valerie Bertinelli.
Details about her weight loss on Jenny Craig have been disputed by several people in the media, including Rosie O’Donnell, who is far from slender herself. O’Donnell went as far as exploiting this on the TV series The View by making a woman who was about the same body size as Kirstie Alley admit that she weighed much more than Alley claimed to weigh. Kirstie Alley also appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show wearing a bikini-like outfit after her weight loss.
Kirstie Alley is slimmer now than in 2005 although she is no longer as slender as she was when she began the role of Rebecca Howe on Cheers. She is set to star on a program called “The Minister of the Divine” on the Fox network, although this has not yet come to pass. Kirstie Alley is 58 years old and the divorced mother of two children.
She is an advocate against obesity and devoted Scientologist. She is one of the few actresses who did not hide her weight gain, but used it to her advantage to not only inspire others to lose weight, but also let the public understand how difficult weight loss can be. Her commercials for Jenny Craig were always laced with humor and warmth.
