Many people remember Carnie Wilson from the 1990s trio “Wilson Phillips”. The band was comprised of Carnie Wilson and her sister Wendy along with Chynna Phillips. The group had several hit songs before breaking up in 1993. Everyone thought that was the end of Carnie Wilson, the daughter of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, but they were wrong.
Carnie Wilson struggled with her weight most of her life. She was the chubby girl who stood out amid the other two slender girls in the band. She weighted 300 pounds at the height of the Wilson Phillips fame and was often the target of cruel jokes at her expense. Ironically, they stemmed from the late Chris Farley of Saturday Night Live, who was also obese and Howard Stern, who has never been what is considered to be “hunk” material. She tried to lose weight a number of different ways but to no avail. At 5’4” and 300 pounds, Carnie Wilson was what is considered to be “morbidly obese.”

Life Changing Weight Loss Decisions
In 1999, Carnie Wilson made the decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery. At this time, this type of surgery was relatively new. She not only underwent the surgery, but it was broadcast over the internet. She lost 150 pounds from gastric bypass surgery and went from a size 28 to a size 6. No longer was she mocked by the public, instead she found herself in popular demand as a talk show host. She also posed for Playboy in 2003 with her new body.
The Yo-Yo Syndrome
After getting married in 2000, Carnie Wilson gained back some of her weight. She also ended up having a baby in 2005, which also added to her weight gain. The weight gain after such a public display of weight loss made her once again the target of cruel jokes and criticism. She joined the Celebrity Fit Club in 2006 and lost 22 pounds, only to gain it back.
Currently, Carnie Wilson is pregnant and expecting a child in June, 2009. After this experience, many are wondering how or if she plans to lose the weight.
Carnie Wilson had the last laugh on the slimmer members of the Wilson Phillips trio, however. Her career has continued to remain steady as is the interest in her weight loss. Although gastric bypass surgery did work for her, as did the regimen introduced in the Celebrity Fitness club, she still apparently struggles with her weight loss issues.
Gastric bypass surgery is also crudely referred to as stomach stapling. The stomach is reduced in size, thus not allowing the person to over indulge in excessive food consumption. As the stomach can stretch, however, it is advised that anyone who undergoes gastric bypass surgery not just rely on the surgery to keep themselves thin. Diet and exercise are still the things that anyone who undergoes this type of treatment must consider.
Although the end result of Carnie Wilson’s weight loss was not permanent, it did give her the confidence that she needed to embark on a career as a talk show host and settle down with a husband and children. The future is uncertain for Carnie Wilson as far as her weight goes, although she has vowed to get back down to her Playboy figure after the birth of her second child. I guess we’ll see!
