Foods You Should Start Limiting TODAY

I know that to ban a particular food item will only send a lot of people in the wrong direction with their diets so I won’t advocate that. As you probably know, thinking that something is off-limits forever will only want you to crave it more! And once you give in to that craving - wham! - you’ve eaten a whole cake or bag of chips or whatever your diet poison is.

For me, what worked best is not to ban something but to LIMIT it from my diet. Following is a list of the top things I drastically cut from my eating lifestyle.

WHITE rice, bread and pasta. I really love my carbs, particularly rice, so limiting my intake of these was the hardest thing for me to do. So how did I cope? I did it GRADUALLY. First, I switched to heather versions. So for rice, I switched to brown rice; for bread, I switched to oatmeal or bran bread; and for pasta, I switched to brown pasta.

From this list, the brown pasta was the least appealing to me but I soon found out that I was just using the wrong brand. When I switched, it made things better for me. And OK, I do ‘cheat’ now and then and have white pasta. Shhh!

Luckily the switch to brown rice and oatmeal and bran bread was actually effortless for me. I enjoyed them a lot. When I got used to eating them, I then went on to reduce my intake of them. So if before, I’d eat rice once everyday, I just ate it 3x per week, and then dwindled this down further to just 1x per week.

Junk Food. At night, my husband and I love to get ‘cozy’ in front of the TV and have a drink and some chips. So the first thing I did was to simply not buy chips anymore! I replaced them with these new found favorites: flavored rice cakes, and cut up veggies dipped in humus! They’re just as delish without packing the calories!

Potatoes. If I’m the rice-eater, my husband is the potato-eater. So this adjustment was harder for him. Again, the trick is not to simply cut it off but to wean it off your system first and then reduce (not remove) it from your diet.

Juice Concentrates. I never realized just how much calories I was drinking with the 100% fruit juices I was consuming. I really thought they were healthy so that taught me the value of reading product labels! So first, I started using less juice concentrate per glass of liquid to enable my body to get used to the ‘lesser taste’. Eventually, I was able to comepletely remove juice concentrates from my body. I know enjoy water with a fresh squeeze of lemon better now!

Although I haven’t personally tried it, I read somwhere that singer Beyonce puts a bit of chicken or vegetable stock in her water if she finds water a bit too boring to drink!

So the moral of the lesson here is not to go cold turkey on the foods you love when you dieting. The secret is to recondition your body - slowly - to consuming these food items much less.

Good luck!
